Hazel Winters Young, age 93, died at home in Mobile, AL, on April 27, 2012 from Alzheimer’s Disease.
Born January 9, 1919 in Big Sandy, TN, she lived in Big Sandy, Gallatin and Knoxville, TN before settling in Mobile in her later years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be sorely missed. A life-long member of the Church of God of Prophecy, she worked tirelessly in the local church wherever she lived and gave generously of her time and effort. She is probably known best for her cooking, baking and quilting as well as her quiet, gentle manner. It was her honor to serve others and she was a shining example of selflessness.
She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Addie Wheatley, her husbands, James Aaron Winters and Rev. Zilvon R. Young, her brothers, Hubert and Carl Wheatley, her sister, Ora Estelle Berry Atchison, her daughters, Anita Winters and Frances Winters Lawrence and son-in-law, Gordon “Jack” Lawrence.
Survivors include her grand-daughters, Melody (Michael) Scott of Mobile, AL and Kristel (Morgan) Phillips of Whiteville, NC, great- grandchildren, David Morgan and Samuel Lawrence Phillips and Rihanna Camille Scott, step-daughter, Barbara Kirkland-Robinson (Doug), step-sons, Wayne (Judy) Young, Harold (Betty) Young, Terry (Janice) Young and Tony (Dava) Young and their families and a host of brother and sister-in-laws and their families and many step grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Mobile, AL on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Gilmer’s Funeral Home and on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 in Big Sandy, TN at the Big Sandy Church of God of Prophecy with burial at the Crooked Creek Cemetery in Benton County, TN.
